The book focuses on Moss’ journey from a teenager who was raised in an Orthodox Jewish family in New York City to a full-time professional photographer in her early 30s.
“I had to leave my family behind, and my family was incredibly supportive,” she says.
She grew up in a strict Orthodox Jewish home.
“They told me I couldn’t do anything, but I didn’t give a shit.
I was like, I’m gonna do whatever I wanna do.
I did it.”
For Moss, the experience of shooting for magazines was a learning experience, and she says that she’s grateful for the opportunities she got to get out into the world.
“When you’re a teenager, you want to just do whatever it is you’re doing, and then you just sort of fall into it,” she adds.
“That’s how I got into it.”
While the majority of Moss’ images were shot in black and white, she says she found it hard to find an image that didn’t have some depth in it.
“There are moments when you think, I really want to show the world what I do, and I think you want a little bit more color, and that’s what I get from all of these images,” she recalls.
“And that’s exactly what I got.
It was all very intentional.”
For many, the most rewarding part of her work is her personal relationship with the subjects.
“One of the things that I love about being a photographer is the fact that I don’t have a lot of pressure,” Moss explains.
“People will take pictures of me, and they will look at me and say, ‘I don’t think I would have done that.'”
When asked what she loves most about the process, Moss answers, “I love that I’m not being forced to do something I don’s have the energy to do.
It’s so freeing.”
